Save the San Lorenzo River Association - 1973

patch to save the san lorenzo river

by Jessica Carver

After the conclusion of the General Plan Presentation in 1973, the “Save the San Lorenzo Valley River” organization was formed. The purpose of the group was to follow through with river and environmental related issues. John Stanley, the first president of the group, and Max Hartstein elected Fred as the first Treasurer. In later years, Fred would serve as Vice President, Educational Chairman, and then President. In June of 1973, the organization became incorporated which meant it was a registered legal entity. Together, the members worked on publishing fact sheets and revising and initiating County Ordinances. As President of the Association, Fred volunteered to help with the Recycling Program and worked to stop the development of Zayante Dam. Fred also worked as an Ecological Advisory for the San Lorenzo River Watershed Management Plan, the first watershed management plan in the State of California; and as a member of the San Lorenzo River Technical Advisory Committee.
