Kylie Smith

Kylie Smith views a naturalist as someone who has curiosity about the natural world, to observe and be curious, and interested in what’s around them. Taking a slow hike, meandering, good pace to take in what’s around you is a good example. There are different ways to immerse yourself in different ecosystems because nature is everywhere. Kylie thinks one way to reach new naturalists is just to encourage them to sit outside and make observations.

Kylie especially enjoys being a naturalist in Santa Cruz because not only are there so many diverse ecosystems, but there are also many naturalists in the region. The vast biodiversity in Santa Cruz also helps inspire Kylie for her scientific illustration and artwork where she has sketched out many different plants, animals and habitats.
